Research… The NSABP pioneered breast cancer studies that led to the establishment of lumpectomy plus radiation over mastectomy as the standard surgical treatment for breast cancer. We were also the first to demonstrate that adjuvant therapy (treatment in addition to surgery) could alter the natural history of breast cancer, increasing survival rates, and demonstrating on a large scale the preventive effects of the drugs tamoxifen and raloxifene in reducing rates of invasive breast cancer. The NSABP began research in colorectal cancer in 1977 and since then has randomized nearly 15,000 patients into large Phase III colorectal studies. The data from these trials have significantly influenced the treatment of colorectal cancer. A trial that finished in 1990 ultimately established the standard of care for chemotherapy following removal of the primary tumor in colon cancer patients. The NSABP
Foundation, Inc., headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, has
more than 700 research sites in North America and an
international network of oncology and research
professionals. |
